Gulgelberger first references "canonized literature" to describe it as mainstream, it also is connected to "the first world". He also references to 'the other' as being 'third world', so it brings me to assume that canonization is the priviliaged, the westerners, not for the Mexico, the third world. Gulgelberger also talks about the poor relationship between the United States and Mexico saying, :"And shortly afterwards she adds: "I have been here. This land will always be a part of me." "Third World Literature" has not become a part of us because we refuse to legitimize it. The closure is unilateral"
I believe "the canon" is peoples vision, what they choose to care about and read and the fact that third world countries, like mexico, aren't getting enough attention. What leads me to believe this is when Gulgerberger writes, "The issue then is not to integrate Third World literary works into the canon but to identify with "the wretched of the earth" and to learn from them--to learn from the Third World writer how to look into what is really going on in the world and why it has been going on and thus to learn about our own limitations."
