Throughout this book there are strong cases of inequality between men and women. One quote I thought represented this well was when Walter was talking to his wife and he says, "…See there, that just goes to show you what women understand about the world. Evan Corson Civil Rights movement  The civil rights movement was a huge turning point in our country’s history. The civil rights movement was happening largely between 1954 and 1968, around the same period of A Raisin in the Sun. Although the slavery was abolished after the Civil War, discrimination didn’t stop, and many African Americans still had to deal with the effects of racism. Because of this, African Americans and others began to fight for social equality. With the help of this movement, African Americans have become more educated, and had more opportunities. It brought a greater access to education, better jobs, and better living opportunities. The civil rights movement and women's movement go hand in hand in creating a better future for African Americans. I find these issues important to me because its sadly what were still facing in our world today. I thought the prompt was very difficult at first because I had no idea what "the canon" was. This prompt did help me think about the literary canon in a new way because I was not aware of all the different cultural canons, including the one I am writing about. 2.) Evan Corson Lit Engagements 3/13/2018 The Alternative canon                I believe Tupac and his poem “Life Through My Eyes” should be added to the alternative canon of literature. The experiences and events he has been through that he describes is what a lot of people have had to go through, not everyone has a good childhood and I think that’s the people he is connecting with in this poem. Tupac began his music career as a rebel with a cause to articulate the injustices endured by many African-Americans.
