Idea Draft for Essay 3

One social issue I want to focus on throughout this book is equality between men and females and more specific Gender roles. I noticed throughout the book there is a lot of sexist remarks when it comes to women that are belittling to their potential role in society.

One quote to support this is when Walter says, "WALTER
…See there, that just goes to show you what women understand about the world. Baby, don’t nothing happen for you in this world ‘less you pay somebody off! (1.1.81)
Walter says that need for money is a mans thing, and that Ruth, being a woman, just wouldn't understand. This sexist remark, I feel, comes from the need to put people down in order to feel more powerful.

"WALTER
Who the hell told you you had to be a doctor? If you so crazy ‘bout messing ‘round with sick people  then go be a nurse like other women or just get married and be quiet…" (1.1.125)
Here it shows Walter belittling Beneatha's dreams of becoming a doctor and telling her to conform and be a what every women grew up to be at the time.

    Your social issue is clear. Remember to discuss why it still matters today. For example, are statistics showing that less women are becoming doctors? etc. just to show why your issue is relevant.

    2. Quotes from the play using 2-3 quotes, with Quote Sandwiches to introduce the quote with context, and analyze the quote for its significance. Don't assume your reader knows anything about A Raisin in the Sun [this is a good rule for all sources/academic essays; explain the background information of what the reader needs to know]. Quote as "Dialogue in Prose Drama" (only page number, no Act, Scene, etc.).

    NDNU Database and Google Scholar are great ways to find scholarly sources. I'm not sure what your major is, but if you are taking any history, sociology, psychology courses even, your professors might have some good scholarly sources.

Essay 4 reflection

Finding connections in this essay for me was extremely tough. I was able to think of my first connection between The Pit and The Pendulum and Oscar Wao relatively easily, but after that, it took me what felt like forever to find connections. I kept going from story to story to try to find a similar theme and finally I did. It was very hard to figure out other connections because a lot of the literature we read is hard to analyze. Also, some of the literature we read were poems and for me connecting a poem to the story of Oscar Wao felt more difficult then connecting it to another story, even though I did go through many paragraph trials with this. I feel okay about my Essay, I did spend ALOT of time making connections then deleting them because I felt like I could find a stronger connection. Essay 3 Reflection

My issue I wrote about was stereotype threat to women. I found really good research on my topic for both popular and scholarly source which I was thankful for because sometimes finding scholarly sources that directly relate to your topic is difficult. Adding the play into my essay was a little difficult because I didn't remember exactly what they said in the play and so I had to watch the play again. Once I did bring my examples together, I thought it made the essay flow a lot better and take more meaning. I didn't have a hard time writing about stenotypes threat because I did find it interesting to write about so I made sure to do my research. I thought my topic was my mom successful part of this essay because I actually care about my topic, I found that quite a few topics I choose in essays just happen to be 'fighting for female rights' oriented.
