Connecting Sweat and A Raisin In the Sun
In both stories a theme is African-Americans being marginalized by society. A Raisin In the Sun was set in the 1959 and sweat was set in 1926. There is thirty-three years difference between the time period, but African-Americans still had a lot of the same issues from 1926 to 1959. In a Raisin In the Sun, the Younger family is finally able to move out of their crammed apartment, but they can only afford a house in a white community because they are cheaper, which is one problem they had to face because of their race. Before they moved, they were approached multiple times by a white men sent by the community to buy the house from the family because they are not wanted there. They have to battle the diversity of being a different race and therefore being treated differently. Sweat, like many of Hurston's stories, focuses on Southern, working class African Americans. Another thing I noticed was fact that we never see white people, we barely even hear about them. We know that Delia does their laundry, but she never talks with them or about them. In both Sweat and A Raisin In the Sun, both African-American characters are treated as less then white.
